Cowell Cruises to Victory

Report thanks to Mick Kneale

Over the weekend, the IOM Yacht Club hosted the IOM Cruiser Championship – two races Saturday afternoon and two more Sunday morning.
The eight yachts entered enjoyed excellent racing in the moderate easterly breeze, which dropped lighter for Sunday. Race Officers Pete Hinds, Russell Armstrong and Mick Kneale laid good courses using the whole of Bay ny Carrickey with marks off Scarlett, Kallow Point and the Cronnags.

The fastest yacht, Cheetah Cub, entered by Robin Wootton and Sally Caley crossed the line first every race but on corrected time their best result was a second in the final race.

The gentle conditions suited the Sonatas – the smallest yachts entered. Rob Cowell, helming his recently acquired Blue Haze, crewed by Phil Hardisty, Donald Edwards, Dave Edwards and Keith Poole won every race to win the Brewis Memorial Cup.

It has been a few years since a Ramsey based team has prevailed in this event – and until now, no one has ever won every race in this regatta.

Overall result: 1st Blue Haze (Sonata) R Cowell, 2nd Cheetah Cub (Reflex 38) R Wootton & S Caley, 3rd Folly (1720) P Carine, 4th French Mustard (First 405) J.Ellis, 5th Shellan (Dehler 36CWS) R Baker, 6th Socery (Sigma 33) M Stanton, 7th Fugitive (Sonata) D Pownall, 8th Popard (Westerly Cirrus) J Dowling.
