Easter Regatta Report and Photos
Manx Sailing & Cruising Club at Ramsey hosted the IOM Xerox Easter Regatta, traditionally the first regatta and start of the 2010 season.11 boats and crews entered, maybe some of the regular crews were off Island or believed the shipping forecast!
Conditions were mixed, generally light winds, 180 degree wind shifts, showers at times and on the cool side, a bit like Injebreck but with tide!
For Race 1 the OD set a windward/leeward course. A clean start for all saw Mick Kneale and crew in the National 18 clear the line first and stay there. Meanwhile the wind dropped from a light 2/3 SE at the start to zero, eventually filling in 1 to 2 NW, this benefited the faster boats with the National 18 first followed by Jerry Colman and crew in the 505. The closest finish was between Russell Collister and Andrew Dean in the RS200’s locked in a gybing duel to the finish line, Andrew being given the lead over Russell by a couple of inches.
In Race 2 the wind seemed to have steadied in a NE direction, midway through the race Russell found himself in a hole, the win on corrected time going to Andrew. Meanwhile the single-handed fleet, lasers seemed to be grouped together in their own race regardless of rig size, Simon Pressley coming out on top with a standard rig.
For Race 3 a reduced size ‘P’ course was set. Not long after the start the wind from NE faded away during a rain shower and eventually filled in with a gentle breeze from the SE, at this point the course was further shortened with Russell coming out on the top this time to give him Third place overall .
Junior prize was awarded to Amy Shute sailing her tiny Tera.
Many thanks to Mark Corrin of IOM Xerox for kindly sponsoring the event, the ladies of the club who provided a welcome buffet at the presentation and MS & CC for hosting yet another successful event.
