Russell and June Make it Six in a Row
Russell and June Collister took the honours at the Manx Dinghy Championships last weekend from runner up Mick Kneale and third placed Smiler Williams.
Hosted this year by Peel Yacht Club the racing saw some great sailing conditions with a fresh breeze blowing all weekend. The shifting direction and choppy sea made for tactical racing both up and down the course with the search for the next bit of pressure and favourable shift on everyones mind.

Thanks for putting up the results.. Could have sworn we did race two.. no entry in our row (C-23) for that one - very odd. I guess it was to be discarded anyway but, it may affect the positions behind wherever we should appear.

I remember we were about a boat-length or two behind you at the last bottom mark and then we made a mess of the drop, giving you a little cushion. You finished (according to the list) in 28.41 - I know we finished in less than 29 minutes - and thought it was going to be very close between us bearing in mind you give us 18 seconds an hour. A less than half-hour race so you needed to be more than 9 seconds ahead. So, we did finish then - not quite ga-ga yet! When I signed in on Sunday am, I’m sure we were marked as having a first and a second on day one. All very curious.

Mick, I remember your time (unofficially) as 28:52 for Race 2. This would have placed you 3rd for Race 2, but as you rightly say, you haven’t been allocated a result for it in the final numbers. In omitting your position, it would appear that Anthony Gullen has been allocated the 3rd, and all the other places allocated sequentially after that. I do however recall that you had a 2nd and 3rd when we signed on, on Sunday morning as we were both on 5 points (we had a 4th and a 1st).
We now have the results on the PSCC site. The PDF version is 147 Kb which makes it a bit more user friendly. http://www,peelsailingclub.com/images/dinghy_results.pdf - I’ve recreated this from Mark Gosden’s original so there’s always a small chance of error but I’ve been very careful. The same results are also available as a tab delimited txt file for spreadsheet use at http://www.peelsailingclub.com/iomdc_07.txt - This file opens and its contents can be copied and pasted into a text file on the users machine for import into any spreadsheet.

Mick, maybe you were somehow penalised for fouling the late finishing red RS400, (port - starboard and taking the p**s on the finishing linecome to mind).
Seriously though I had you (unofficially) as second in that race with the RS400 third.

Mick, I also recall reading the results as you described, you had 1st and 2nd, we had 2nd 3rd.

Thanks all for your responses. I see in the latest version on Peel website we still don’t exist in race 2. Makes no difference to our overall place but it is a bit off to miss someone altogether. We are not exactly the smallest boat out there after all and, as June says, all the places above the first 3 in this race should go up one.
I further recall that after the finish flag appeared at the very last moment in race 1 (after we had gone to the far end of the line on what we thought was the next beat) both we and Smiler crossed the line right at the committee boat, just in case - and sure enough, the finish flag appeared when we were two boat lengths from the line. Also quite unconventional - and unnecessary using the average lap. We would have liked another lap to gain a few more seconds on the RS200s too! Ah well - it could have been raining, I suppose.

Flipper raises an interesting point. What is the remedy against a boat which has finished but subsequently interferes with a boat which is still racing (and right in front of the committee boat)? Should the finished boat automatically retire from the race? And in this instance, should the crew of the offending Nat 18 all be sent on a 10 mile run followed by a cold bath as further punishment!

These sea creatures are vindictive - even Flipper wouldn’t pretend he was really still “racing”. The secret code-word ‘Starboard” usually works wonders when shouted loud at the dozy old git in the back of the other boat.
Anyway - a 10 mile run with the symmetric kite is hardly punishment - my crew will draw lots for the cold bath though - ah, the joy of delegation in a multi person boat..
Maybe there is some labyrinthine Celtic force making our line blank on the race 2 sheet??

Ok, results have been amended thanks to Mark Gosden. The file is updated (although rather large to download) and should now be correct.
A smaller pdf file (161 Kb) is available on the PSCC (copy it up if you wish, Tom) and the txt file for spreadsheet use has also been updated.
