Overwintering
Well all, I hope you are having a marvellous run up to Christmas.
I know the forums are decidedly quiet at the moment, as the nights draw in, and the sailing news may be a little thin on the ground, but that’s not to say mSr aren’t looking to the future with some big ideas.
Some may have heard this subject raised before, but let me retouch on it. It is mSr’s wish to give back to the Manx sailing community, and our current thinking is to develop this web site into something a little more special, and a lot more useful.
We are looking to development an online system that aids the organisation and result tracking of sailing events for sailors and clubs alike. Ideas at the moment include:
- Each sailor being able to create an account from which they can maintain their personal information, and their boat details in the sail boat registry, enter races and keep track of results.
- Each club or event organiser having the ability to create race events in to which sailors can enter.
- Real-time tracking of results and race statistics.
- Dedicated event/race pages, giving you one definitive place to check for announcements like race postponements, weather condition updates etc. and hey, if it’s on the web there is no reason why you couldn’t check a box asking for email announcements for the events you enter to be delivered instantly to your inbox, or aggregated in your RSS readers.
- An organisational system to manage safety boats and their crews, and heck, even the volunteers making the post-race sandwiches if anyone thought it may help.
- An improved weather service and detailed tide information.
The point being, we have a few ideas, lots of motivation, and a tiny bit of skill and time, and we want to put it to the best use possible. This is where we would dearly like your help and guidance. If anyone has any input they could give; likes, dislikes, ideas and scepticism’s, then email the usual address (or myself directly - zosont [at] manxsailracer [dot] com) or post them here in the blog or over there in the mSr forums.
Thanks
Nick

Dear Nick
Anything that helps to bring IOM racers together is a great ideal - this will help get over the “critical mass” required to make a sucess of regular racing, training and social events.
I have not been the most active of sailers over the last few years but don’t need much enouragement to be a lot more active.
Please let me know if I can help in any way.
Regards

Thanks Mike, good to know we have your support.
You have a great point, and with the Island being a relatively small place it is all the more important that we reach and indeed build upon that critical mass.
The Isle of Man is a brilliant place to sail, and has a wonderful sailing community - the more people who get to enjoy it the better!
